Your switchboard is the heart of your home’s electrical system — and in a lot of older Hunter homes, it’s well overdue for an upgrade. Here are five signs it’s time to call a licensed electrician.
1. Ceramic fuses instead of circuit breakers
If you’re still rewiring blown fuses with fuse wire, your board belongs to another era — and it isn’t protecting you the way modern breakers do.
2. No safety switches (RCDs)
Safety switches cut the power in milliseconds if they detect a fault, protecting you from electric shock. Modern boards should have them on every circuit. If yours doesn’t, that’s the number-one reason to upgrade.
3. Frequent tripping
A board that trips whenever the kettle and toaster run together is telling you it can’t handle modern loads.
4. A faint burning smell or warm switches
Any burning smell, discolouration or warmth at the board is a serious warning sign — switch off and call an electrician.
5. You’re adding solar, an EV charger or air conditioning
Modern additions draw serious power. A switchboard upgrade makes your home safe and ready for them.
